Who is Sylvia Plath?

Sylvia Plath was born in Boston, Massachusetts on October 27, 1932. His mother, Aurelia Schauber Plath (1906–1994), was a second-generation American of Austrian descent, and his father, Otto Plath (1885–1940), was from Grabow, Germany. Plath's father was an entomologist and professor of biology at Boston University who wrote a book about bumblebees.

         On April 27, 1935, Plath's brother Warren was born, and in 1936 the family moved from 24 Prince Street in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, to 92 Johnson Avenue, Winthrop, Massachusetts. Plath's mother, Aurelia, was raised in Winthrop, and her grandparents, the Shobbers, lived in a square of town called Point Shirley, a location mentioned in Plath's poem. While at Winthrop, eight-year-old Plath published her first poem in the children's section of the Boston Herald.

        Over the next few years, Plath published several poems in regional magazines and newspapers. At the age of 11, Plath began keeping a journal. In addition to writing, he showed early promise as an artist, winning an award for his painting from the Educational Arts and Writing Prize in 1947. Although only the Colossus was published while she was alive, Plath was a prolific poet, and in addition to Ariel, Hughes published three other volumes of her work posthumously, including alleged poems, which was the recipient of the 1982 Pulitzer Prize. He was the first poet to win the Pulitzer Prize.

        Ariel (1965)—Plath's later collection of poems that included "Daddy" and her famous poems, "Lady Lazarus"—grown during her lifetime the development of a very wide following of devoted and enthusiastic readers. Ariel received a review in The New York Times that praised its "constant honesty", "the sophistication of the poem's use" and "bitter force", and Poetry Magazine noted "a widespread impatience, a positive urgency to the poems". quickly became one of the most popular American poets.
